5 Top Tips for Catching More Pike on the Lure This Summer
Summer is an exciting time to target pike, as warmer waters and longer daylight hours make these apex predators more active. But with the season’s unique challenges, such as changing water conditions and picky fish, it’s vital to adjust your tactics to consistently land those thrilling catches. Based on my experience and research, here are my top five tips for increasing your success with lure fishing for pike during the summer months.
1. Try Topwater Lures for Explosive Strikes
Few things are as heart-pounding as watching a pike attack a lure on the water’s surface. Summer is an ideal time to use topwater lures, especially early in the morning or late in the evening when pike are hunting actively near the shallows. The thrill of seeing a pike rocket up from the depths to smash your lure is unmatched!
Recommended Lures: Frogs or the Suicide Duck are excellent options.
Tip: Work your lure with sudden pops or erratic movements to mimic injured prey and trigger a strike.
2. Focus on Weed Beds and Structures
During summer, pike gravitate toward areas with plenty of cover, such as weed beds, submerged trees, or rocky outcroppings. These spots allow them to ambush prey while staying cool in the shade.
Why It Matters: These areas are hotspots for summer pike activity, making them ideal for presenting your lure.
Tip: Use weedless lures, spinnerbaits, or soft plastics designed to glide through thick vegetation without snagging. Don't shy away from casting into dense cover as this is often where they hide.
3. Fish During Cooler Times of Day
Temperature plays a big role in summer pike behaviour. During the peak heat of the day, they often retreat to deeper or shaded waters, becoming less active. However, in the cooler hours, early morning or late evening, pike come closer to the surface and shallow areas to hunt.
Why It Matters: Targeting these active feeding times increases your chances of a successful strike.
Tip: If you're fishing midday, focus on areas with cooler water, such as deeper parts of the lake or shaded spots near overhangs. Overcast days can also extend feeding periods.
4. Match Lure Colours to Water Conditions
In clear water, natural or muted colours work best, as they mimic prey like baitfish and blend into the environment. In murkier or algae-rich waters, brighter, more fluorescent choices stand out, helping pike locate your lure.
Bright Colours: Yellow, and white for low visibility.
Natural Colours: Green, silver, or brown for clear waters.
Tip: Experiment with lures that have contrasting patterns or glitter finishes to add extra flash and attract more attention.
5. Keep Your Gear Pike-Ready
Summer fishing means strong, feisty pike so make sure your gear can handle them! Ensure your rod has enough backbone to control a large fish and of course handle the size of lures you're using, and pair it with a reel that can handle smooth, powerful runs. Wire traces are essential, as pike’s sharp teeth can easily cut through weaker leaders.
Line Strength: Opt for braided line. I use the Berkley 47lb braid.
Tip: Regularly check your hooks. Pike have bony mouths that require sharp hook points for solid hookups.
Final Thoughts
Summer is one of the most rewarding seasons for pike fishing. The combination of active predators, beautiful weather, and diverse strategies makes every trip an adventure. By focusing on topwater lures, understanding their preferred habitats, and preparing the right gear, you can consistently improve your chances of landing more pike.
Every angler develops their own favourite tactics over time, and experimenting is part of the fun. Whether it’s chasing explosive surface strikes or mastering the art of lure presentation in the weeds, summer pike fishing is an experience filled with thrills and challenges.
So grab your gear, hit the water, and enjoy everything this dynamic season has to offer. The next trophy pike might be just one cast away!
